Punakaiki is a small settlement beside the rugged Paparoa National Park. Punakaiki is famous for its Pancake Rocks and blowholes. Through a layering-weathering process called stylobedding the Dolomite Point limestone has formed into what looks like stacks of thick pancakes. The ocean surges into the caverns and booms menacingly among the rocks. The noise is quite scary actually!
