Auckland's Lava Fields

Auckland is built on 50 extinct and dormant volcanoes.  The last one to erupt was Rangitoto about 600 years ago, and no one can predict when the next one will occur. Some of Auckland's volcanoes are cones, some are filled with water, and others have been quarried out. Moves are afoot to register the fields as a World Heritage Site and protect what is left.

This is Cornwall Park located at One Tree Hill and located in the lava fields.  We drove up to Sir John Logan Campbell Monument and got a good look at at the volcanic mounds that make up the lava fields.
