Flax...New Zealand Style

The flax is an abundant plant of both swamps and coastal regions throughout New Zealand. Leaf blades are used by Maori for weaving baskets and mats. The fibres are used for making ropes, fishing nets, and clothing. The dried flower stalks were lashed together in bundles and used for rafts.
