Auckland Harbour Cruise

The harbour cruise was well worth the time and money.

Bean Rock Lighthouse
The lighthouse is situated at the entrance of Waitemata Harbour. This historic lighthouse was built in 1871, and its small hexagonal cottage provided accommodation for one lightkeeper. The light became automatic in 1912, and is now a landmark in the harbour.

Rangitoto Island

This island erupted from the sea in a series of dramatic explosions about 600 years ago and is now dormant.

North Head, Devonport

North Head guards the entrance to the harbour and for this reason was made into an artillery battery in 1885 to defend Auckland from invasion.

Devonport Naval Base

The naval base dates back to 1840 when Auckland was named the capital city of New Zealand, but was short lived.  The country's capital is now Wellington. The buildings are now navy offices.

Auckland Harbour Bridge

The bridge opened up in 1959 and took over 200 workers and nearly 4 years to build.  It originally only had 4 lanes of traffic, and because traffic increased so much, another 2 lanes later had to be added on either side.  You can also bungy jump from this bridge.

Chelsea Sugar Refinery

Chelsea Sugar, one of New Zealand's iconic food brands, has been producing sugar at this refinery since 1884. Today the company produces 200,000 tonnes of raw sugar every year.

Westhaven Marina and the Viaduct

The largest marina in the southern hemisphere, Westhaven, can accommodate up to 1800 boats ranging in sizes up to 28m.  Nearby, the Viaduct is home to many bars, and restaurants as well as a Marine Museum and many super yachts.
