Heading South

We take our leave from Lake's End Lodge, point the car south, and drive. We stop in a pretty little, lakeside town called Te Anau, popular with tourists and travelers. It is quiet, and peaceful, and known as the gateway to the Fiordland National Park, and the scenic, popular destinations of Milford Sound, and Doubtful Sound. To the east are beautiful, pastoral areas of central Southland, while across the lake lie the rugged mountains of Fiordland. The lake was gorged out by a huge glacier and has several arms that extend into the mountainous, forested, western shoreline. Its deepest point is 417m.
