Martyrs' Day
The riots of January 9, 1964 (now known as Martyrs' Day) escalate between Panama and the US regarding occupation rights of the Canal Zone. Twenty Panamanian rioters were killed and over five hundred were injured. A holiday for Panamanians was developed because of this past situation. Due to the country's sensitivity of this event, we were told to lie low for this weekend even though we are Canadians. So we will hang out at our pool and watch the beach from our condo. A huge party is occurring. A helicopter landed on the beach by our condo with an entourage of vehicles bringing in party supplies.
