Puerto Morelos is a lovely little town on the beach about 20 minutes north of Playa del Carmen. We discovered it 18 years ago when we were traveling with our children in a motorhome. It was then, and still is a sleepy little fishing town with a few more shops to browse in, many great restaurants to choose from, and it even has a well stocked used book store!! Accommodations have flourished, as others have discovered Puerto Morelos's quaintness. The sand is fine and white, and the beaches are scattered with sun bathers that have more room and privacy than the beaches of Playa del Carmen. And, I've heard the snorkeling is very good also! We spent an afternoon there seeking shelter of a palapa, that came with a table and chairs. The cost to this luxury was not cheap, so bartering was needed, but I still think we got stung in the end!!
