We decided to take the ferry over to the island of Cozumel. Two years ago when we were in this area, we ferried over to Isla Mujeres from Cancun and discovered a gem. A very, very nice island! This time around, and leaving from Playa Del Carmen, our ferry was much newer, bigger, and the musical entertaiment not quite so quirky. The ride was rough, and if you sat outside the ferry workers needed to cover the open windows with heavy plastic to keep away the spray of the water. Carnival was still going, so we saw many costumed dancers performing in the streets.
Carnival isn't as crazy in Mexico as it is in other South American countries. We met many people from Brazil and Argentina who escape Carnival by taking their holidays, and were heading to Mexico. I was surprised Mexico even had Carnival, and I'm not sure if it is celebrated in all parts of the country.
