Our next destination after leaving Patzcuaro, was to visit the newest, but now dormant, volcano of Paricutin. The volcano first erupted in a farmer's field in 1942. It was the first ever that scientists were able to see the birth of a new volcano, drawing popular and scientific attention.
I didn't do my homework, and my chosen destination took us down a road that wasn't suited to our small rental, so we deserted the plan to visit, and decided to head back to Zihuatanejo. But, that plan was also a huge surprise. We entered cartel country where the avocados are grown and the road turned to a river bottom. We drove for what seemed like forever on this terrible road! I wasn't concerned about the cartel, because they would have no issues with us, but I was concerned about the break down of our car in the middle of nowhere.
This is the turnoff and road to the volcano(I have since found out this is the back road). We gave it a go, but turned around after we realized it wasn't going to get any better.
One of the many cartel garrisons we passed along our way. There were usually a couple of big men with big, black guns sitting inside, but gave us no more than a second look.
Aha! Finally, some pavement!
We are finally in familiar territory, and on our way back to Zihua.
