Banks Peninsula

The gorgeous Banks Peninsula was formed by two gigantic volcanic eruptions about 8 million years ago. Harbours and bays radiate out from the peninsula's centre, but the historic town of Akaroa is the highlight. It was first settled by the French and you can see that influence in the historic, charming buildings of the town. The waters around Banks Peninsula are home to one of the smallest and rarest of all dolphins, the Hector's dolphin, found only in NZ. Unfortunately, the tide was out, and there were no dolphins of any kind to be seen.
