Red Fort in Old Delhi, India
Founded by Emporer Shah Jahan, this fort took 10 years to construct (1638-48). My research revealed it had decapitated bodies of prisoners built into the foundations for luck (our self guided-tour never divulged that info!), and 12m-high walls. It was very interesting and must have been an absolutely gorgeous place in its hay day. Many buildings are now gone, along with the gold, chandeliers, drapery, and fountains. We toured the museums but found it quite boring as it dwelled on the English's colonization of India, and India's determination and efforts to break free from that grip.
