San Blas Islands

On the third morning we arose to the first glimpse of the San Blas Islands and Panama.  The Archipielago de San Blas comprise of nearly 400 islands off the coast of Panama.  The islands are home to a group of indigenous people called the Kuna.  The Kuna have governed the region since the 1920's when the Panamanian government granted the tribe the right of self rule following an a Kuna uprising that led to the death of 22 Panamanian policemen and 20 Kuna who had befriended them.
Today, the Kuna not only self govern themselves, they also have 2 representatives in the Panamanian legislature.
