Chefchaouen or The Blue City, which it is affectionately known as, is located in the Rif Mountains. It's a very pretty little artsy town of washed blue/white paint. The Medina is small and uncrowded and easy to explore, even with a bus load of people. It's a popular destination for backpackers due to its availability to cannabis.
Chef was founded in 1471 by the Berbers who wanted to keep the Portuguese out. Chef then expanded with the arrival of Muslim and Jewish refugees from Granada in 1494. The town remained isolated and xenophobic. Christians were forbidden to enter, until Chef was occupied by Spanish troops in 1920. They were briefly thrown out out by Abd al-Krim, who was a Moroccan Rif leader during the Rif War in the 1920's, then the Spanish returned and remained until independence in 1956.
Farewell dear Chefchaouen! It was great to meet you!
