Diego Rivera was a prominent Mexican painter, and is now thought to be one of the leading artists of the 20th century As a painter and prolific muralist he sought to make art that reflected the lives of the working class and native peoples of Mexico. His large frescoes helped establish the Mexican mural movement in Mexico art. Between 1922 and 1953, Rivera painted murals among others in Mexico City, Chapingo, Cuernavaca, San Francisco, Detroit, and New York. His passion for art emerged as child and studied art at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico. In 1907, Rivera traveled to Europe to further his studies. There he befriended many leading artists of the day including Pablo Picasso, and was able to view works by Paul Gaugin, and Henri Matisse, among others. Rivera was married to the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
