Covid or Mexico

Covid or Mexico? That was our question, our dilemma. Do we hunker down in Canada for the winter, or bask in the warm sunshine and fresh air of Zihuatanejo? We decided that Mexico, for us, was a better option. We booked a flight with West Jet for December 28, but saw to our dismay this very same airline canceling all the November flights to Zihua. We knew that would  be the plight of our flight, also. So, we waited for the cancellation to happen, and then rebooked with Air Canada for December 5, flying from Regina to Toronto, with an overnight stay, then onward the next day from Toronto to Zihuatanejo via Mexico City with a short layover. But, unfortunately, that also didn't happen. My anxiety over the trip got the best of me, plus, it didn't help to have a recently developed cold with symptoms of persistent coughing, and sneezing. This time we cancelled. I quickly got over my cold and we rebooked again with Air Canada for December 19, flying from Regina to Toronto, with the overnight stay, then direct from Toronto to Zihua the next day, eliminating Mexico City which was fine by me! The trip was a go! The fights, airports, and hotel were good, with distancing, sanitizing, face masks, and temperature checks. We arrived in Zihua discovering the same Covid19 safety protocols happening as in Canada. Maria, our property manager, was there to greet and transport us to our accommodations. She had disinfectant available for us in our small studio apartment, and brought us our own large carboy of water so we don't have to share with others. There is another couple staying in our small complex, but we haven't seen them yet.

The small city of Zihua is also following Covid19 safety protocols. Most people wear face masks while walking down the streets, and hand sanitizer is available at restaurants and watering holes. We have only gone to outdoor establishments. The Mega grocery store has a disinfectant mat that you step on, before getting your temperature checked, and a squirt of hand sanitizer is dosed out, while face masks and distancing is required. The Canadian and American tourist population is down considerably, while the Mexican tourists are still coming to Zihua for the weekends. We will see what happens for Christmas vacation. We are anticipating an influx of people. We stay away from crowded areas, and seek out quiet beaches. We have created a bubble with our good friends Lynne and Claude, who have a vehicle, which eliminates public transport. Hopefully, the Christmas season is less busy than previous years. I guess time will tell.
