In Mexico, Dia de Los Reyes (Three Kings celebration as the gringos call it) is celebrated on January 6 to honor the Three Wise Men. This holiday represents the day the Three Wise Men gave gifts to Jesus Christ, and the day closes the Christmas festivities. It's also the day the people of Mexico exchange gifts. We were invited to the celebration along with a couple of other tourists, and neighbours and friends of Maria's. According to custom, a cake in the shape of a wreath, coffee, and chocolate milk was served to us. The wreath cake represents the kings' crowns, and inside the cake are several little plastic dolls that represent Baby Jesus. If your slice of cake has the figurine, it is said that you will have a lucky year, and must host a dinner party which traditionally features tamales on February 2. Dia de la Candelaria or Candle Mass Day is said to be the day upon which the Christ child was first presented in the temple. It was an interesting celebration, the cake was delicious, and we met new people.
The candied parts on the cake represent the jewels on the Kings' crowns.
