Small Town Views

Kastraki is a mountain town, with fresh mountain air, and I love it! The town is quaint, and the people are friendly.

A true mountain town....snow capped mountain tops.

We have seen many grannies wearing similar style of clothing. Most are wearing aprons and babushkas along with the black skirt and sweater.

A Room With A View

Our accommodations, Spartacus House, which we chose for its views, has been great. Our room is very comfortable and the breakfast is delicious.

Meteora, Greece

We spent a day traveling to a new area of Greece. From Crete, we flew to Thessalonki, Greece's second largest city, which lies in the north of the country. From there we took 2 different trains, and several hours of travelling we arrived at our destination, the small mountain town of Kastraki. Kastraki sits at the foot of Meteroa which is a World Heritage Site. It has massive, ancient pinnacles of smooth rock, where monasteries have been built on top. It is truly an amazing site!

Rural Crete

Life is slow and lazy in Crete, and it's very charming. We love it. A car gives us a lot of freedom, so we took a drive up into the mountains to see the rural side of Crete. Small towns dot the countryside, while vineyards and orchards of olive trees fill the spaces in between.

Stopped for a coffee and iced tea.

Knossos Palace

Crete's most famous attraction is ancient Knossos Palace, the grand capital of  Minoan Crete. The ruins are impressive where an immense palace once stood. The site was first settled in the neolithic period(6700-3200 BC). Excavation began in 1878, and restoration is being done now.

Hania, Crete

Old Town Hania, is Crete's most evocative city, with its pretty Venetian Quarter, criss-crossed by narrow lanes, culminating at a magnificent harbour. Remnants of Venetian and Turkish architecture abound, with old townhouses now transformed into atmospheric restaurants and boutique hotels.

We completed our excursion to Hania with a plate full of delicious sausages and a glass of wine. The food in Greece has been terrific!
