FourxFour in the Sahara

We had a fun afternoon ripping around in the desert with four by four vehicles. Our driver gave us quite a ride navigating the dunes for a thrilling and sometimes scary experience!

We had a relaxing and delicious barbeque lunch in an oasis.

Shopping in Rissani

Rissani is a dusty small town close to Erfoud, whose light has dimmed through the ages. Back in the day, it was a happening place. It was the location of the famous desert capital between the 14th and 18th century. Caravans of gold and slaves were traded and epic battles were held here.

Our Hotel in Erfoud

Our hotel, as all the others were, was very nice. But, the unique feature with this accommodation was the crumbling old Kasbah attached to it. It looked like a museum.

These small posts are fashioned into steps to climb up into the small jail cells that you have to crawl into.

No standing room in the cell.

A  fire pit for cooking, and maybe heat. There were many other rooms including a mosque, but with no light it was hard to take pictures with my limited knowledge of phone photography.

And now for the new part of the hotel.

Erfoud

Erfoud lies in a bed of fossils dating back hundreds of millions of years ago. Local Berbers search for fossils in perfect condition which are few, so broken ones are taken to labs where they are refurbished. Trilobite replicas can be made from plaster, plastic, or auto-body putty, and can be hard to distinguish from real fossils.

                                            As always, shoppers beware!

On The Road to Erfoud

There were many sites to see through the windows of the bus as we traveled to the Sahara Desert. The land slowly changed from green hills, to mountains and ski towns, and then to sand and dunes.

This charming little ski village named Ifrane is looking a bit like Banff!

                                               An old graveyard.
